Glasgow Against Closures invites you to join us on Saturday 26 November to explore, critique and challenge Glasgow’s affinity for closures and cuts to our venues, jobs and services.
Glasgow Against Closures has now been campaigning to save our city’s venues for 18 months. In this time we have seen pushback from the City Council and Glasgow Life, who have attempted to justify the sustained closure of our cities libraries, leisure centres, community centres and cultural venues. But we have also witnessed the power of local communities, trade unions and targeted campaigns, and localised democratic structures including community councils, to resist any such justifications, and get our venues reopened.
After over a year of campaigning, it’s time for us to share what we’ve learned, and learn ourselves about the greater socio-economic and cultural context within Glasgow that our campaign has been elevated and shaped by. Our conference on October 01 will bring our campaigners together with speakers from community campaigns, trade unions and other groups investing in the needs of the people of this city.
Our sessions have been selected to shed light on information relating to our core campaign demands. Since the beginning of our campaign, these demands have remained unchanged.
- Stop the closures! The City Council must do everything in their power to make sure that all publicly owned venues will never permanently close, and all of them reopen as soon as possible.
- They belong to the people! The City Council must commit to keeping all our venues under public ownership, reject Community Asset Transfers and shelve the controversial ‘People Make Glasgow Communities’ scheme.
- End Glasgow Life! The City Council must create a mechanism to bring the staff and assets of Glasgow back into direct Council management as done with other failed Arms-Length Organisations.
